Aleš Ryška, Professor, M.D., Ph.D.
Graduated at the Charles University, Medical Faculty in Hradec Králové (MD – 1994), Ph.D.
in pathology (2001), board certification in pathology (2000). Working at The Fingerland
Department of Pathology, Charles University Medical Faculty in Hradec Králové, Czech
Republic (full Professor of Pathology – 2007 – to date), Vice-Dean for Student‘s Affairs –
2003–2010. Currently head of the department. Member of several scientific societies and
editorial boards (International Academy of Pathology – Czech Division – president, Society
of Czech Pathologists – president, European Society of Pathology –member of the Executive
Committee, Local Organizing Committee of the 24th European Congress of Pathology in
Prague (2012) – president, Editorial board Czech-Slovak Pathology and Forensic Medicine,
Editorial board Virchows Archiv – Associate Editor, Editorial board Clinical Oncology).
Interested namely in diagnostics of lesions of the breast, thyroid and salivary glands –
cytology, histology and special methods, such as immunohistochemistry, molecular
biology, etc. as well as in predictive pathology (detection of markers predicting response to
targeted therapy) and quality control in pathology. Principal investigator and co-investigator
of 12 research projects.
Author and co-author of 115 full-text articles in peer-reviewed journals. Publication „Ryška

Invited speaker at multiple national and international meetings (Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia). Tutor at the course of European School of
Pathology (thyroid gland cytology). 502 records in the SCI, h-index=13.
George Burkadze, Professor, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Burkadze currently holds the position of Professor of Pathology and Head of the
Department of Pathological Anatomy, N. Kipshidze Central University Clinic, Tbilisi in Georgia.
He is the Vice-president of Georgian Association of Pathologists and Cytopathologists
and works as a consultant cytopathologist for Georgian National Screening Program. Dr.
Burkadze gained his M.D. degree from Tbilisi State Medical Institute in Georgia in 1983
and Ph.D. degree in Pathological Anatomy in 1986, followed by professional development
including postgraduate training in pathology and cytopathology (Tel-Aviv University,
Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Israel), in modern pathology and molecular diagnostics
(Brigham & Women’s hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Harvard Medical
School, Boston, MA, USA). Dr. Burkadze and his lab have been pioneers in cervical cancer
screening and Papanicolaou staining as well as implementing immunohistochemistry in
diagnostic pathology in Georgia and educating health professionals about these techniques
by means of workshops and continuing medical education courses. He is currently working
on two research grants aiming to study BRCA1 expression and circulating tumor cells in
breast cancer patients, awarded by Georgian National Science Foundation, Tbilisi, Georgia.
Dr. Burkadze is a member of European Society of Pathology (ESP), College of American
Pathologists (CAP), United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists (USCAP), and
the author of more than 50 original research articles, and 10 textbooks and brochures.
